Websites 101 - how and why to building websites

I get asked a lot about building websites. People ask me where to hire a web designer, what do they need in a website, how much does it cost. I've built websites from $500 to $8M and everything in between so I find this to be a vague question.

It is like asking how much does it cost to buy a house in the USA. The answer ranges from $7,500 in downtown Detroit, to the $millions on the beautiful coastline in California or Florida and everything in between.

What you need to do to create your website depends on what you are planning to do with it. Are you creating an online business or just playing around posting pictures and having fun.

  1. Before you even start looking into spending money on a website be sure to clarify these questions.
  2. What do I envision the end result to be?
  3. Why will people come to my website?
  4. What kind of information do I want to convey to people?
  5. Is anyone interested in my topic?

Get the free download "7 Steps to Creating an Internet Business" by entering your name and email address in the box on the right. This book contains everything you need to know. Sit down with a sheet of paper or your computer and start to answer the questions in the book. When you think you are done, ask yourself "what exactly does that mean?" and add more details.

Then, go to Wordpress.com and get a free blog page and start creating your content there. As the saying goes "the devil is in the details". It all seems easy until you have to actually create the content and make it interesting.

Above all, never start with the design, the colours, the logo, and even the business name are secondary in the Internet world. It is all about what you deliver in content.
